North Carolina still looking good ... but not invincible
Before the college basketball season tipped off, there was a feeling in some circles that every team in the Atlantic Coast Conference, if not nationally, was playing for second place. North Carolina was such a clear favorite for league and national honors that some had crowned the Tar Heels champions-in-waiting.
"They returned three or four first-round draft choices," says Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg. "So it was easy to come to that conclusion."
As the regular season passes the midway point, however, the Tar Heels (16-2) have already lost to two conference opponents (Boston College and Wake Forest) and are No. 6 in the USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches Poll. Two ACC rivals, No. 1 Wake and No. 2 Duke, are ranked ahead of them.
