As Inside Carolina first reported over the weekend, UNC quarterback Cam Sexton has informed the Tar Heel coaches of his decision to transfer for his final season of college eligibility. Sexton confirmed this in an interview Wednesday with the Fayetteville Observer.
Sexton, of Laurinburg, N.C., took over the starting quarterback job in 2008 when T.J. Yates suffered an injury in the third game of the season. Sexton quarterbacked UNC this past season to wins over five bowl-bound opponents -- Miami, UConn, Notre Dame, Boston College and Georgia Tech. His final 2008 numbers were 1,261 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions.
“I have always been a competitor and I always wanted to play,’’ Sexton told The Observer. “I absolutely hated being on the bench. There is no two ways about it.
“I enjoyed watching the success we had as a team. But ultimately it came down to that I have one year of eligibility left. I have goals and dreams just like everybody else. So I felt like the best decision for me was to graduate and go play somewhere else.’’
